Lower School Tutoring
Lower School Support for All
Students identified as needing additional help with English Language Arts, Math, or other subjects will receive targeted, small group interventions and supports during the school day both in the context of their own classroom as well as from our dedicated staff of academic support specialists.
In addition to the tiered supports available to all students, Great Hearts Irving Lower teachers go above and beyond to support students. The following types of tutoring are by invite only. If you are concerned for your child and are wondering if they are a good candidate for one of these types of tutoring, please reach out via email to your child’s classroom teacher.
Arrival Tutoring
One-on-one or one-on-two tutoring is offered for students in Kindergarten through 5th grades who have demonstrated a need for additional support and have been invited by their teacher. This type of tutoring will take place during carline arrival (7:15 to 7:30am) one day a week on Monday through Thursday. Teachers will email a parent/guardian to let them know of the invitation for morning arrival tutoring. With the parent’s consent, the student will be given a “Mustang Tutoring” pass. The parent is asked to drop off their child at the beginning of morning carline by entering the parking lot as close to 7:10am as possible, in order to be in the first unload.
After School Small Group Math Tutoring
Small Group Math tutoring is offered for students in Grades 3rd through 5th who have demonstrated a need and been invited by their teacher. Grade level specific Math tutoring occurs from 4:00 to 4:30pm. Each 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade teacher will invite up to 6 students for after school math tutoring. Students will be invited that show a need and have not met grade level benchmark expectations. This tutoring will be on a quarterly basis. Beginning in September, teachers will email the parents/guardian of students that are struggling. The teacher will maintain communication with parents regarding the continued need of students to attend tutoring.
All students in after school math tutoring should be picked up at the Blue Carline Gate promptly at 4:30pm. For the safety of all, parents should park and walk up to the Blue Gate holding their child(ren)’s placard(s). Please do not use the carline for tutoring pick up. Students will be called outside and dismissed to parents one at a time. Please remember to bring your child’s carline placard so that we can ensure we are releasing students to authorized individuals. Tutoring pick up ends at 4:40pm. If you are late to pick up your child they will be signed into Athenaeum, the after-school program, and you will be charged $1 per minute. If your child is signed up for Athenaeum they will be dropped off with the Athenaeum staff and will continue their afternoon as normal.
Private Tutoring
Private tutoring is the responsibility of a student’s parents. Some of our teachers may be interested in facilitating this need for students at the rate of a dollar per minute 30-60 minute sessions, at the agreement with the teacher. Teachers are not allowed to offer private tutoring to a student that is in their current classroom. If you may be interested in arranging for private tutoring from one of our teachers, please reach out to taylor.ramirez@greatheartstxschools.org.
If you have any questions or concerns about tutoring, please reach out to your child’s teacher. Teacher email addresses can be found at greatheartsirving.org/lowerschoolfaculty.
