Middle School Spring Swing Dance at Great Hearts Irving Upper School

Saturday, March 2nd, 2024

6th Grade Dance | 5-6:30 pm

7th & 8th Grade Dance | 6:30-8:00 pm

The dance will take place at the Upper School Gym and MPR. Tickets cost $10 and can be bought ahead of time online using a credit card or at the front desk with cash or check (made out to Great Hearts Irving). If paying with cash, please bring exact change as we cannot guarantee to have correct change on hand. While we encourage you to purchase tickets ahead of time, we will accept cash payments at the door.

In addition to purchasing a ticket, all students must submit a signed permission form. The permission form is linked below and printed copies will be distributed to students on Thursday, February 22nd.

The Spring Swing is an opportunity for our Middle School students to join with their peers and enjoy an evening together in camaraderie. To that end, we ask that students do not come to the dance as dates, and no guests are permitted.

Spring Swing Dress Code

The Spring Swing Dress Code follows the Semi-Formal Events Dress Code found in the Upper School Family Handbook, summarized here:

Gentlemen should wear dress slacks (no jeans or patched pocket pants), a dress shirt, tie, and dress socks. Hair should be trimmed and styled appropriately for the occasion.

Ladies should wear modest-length skirts or dresses (no shorter than two inches above the knee). Tops should not be strapless or spaghetti-strap, dip too low below the collar bone, or bare the midriff. Hair should be styled appropriately for the occasion.

*Since the dance will be held in the gym, nice tennis shoes, converse, boat shoes, and the like will be permissible. No hard soles or black soles, and no athletic style tennis shoes such as Air Jordan’s. Students wearing improper footwear will be asked to go shoeless during the dance or to change into proper footwear.

6th Grade Formal Dance Cards

Another unique feature of the Spring Swing for our 6th grade students is the use of formal dance cards to help relieve the pressure of this unfamiliar social situation and to allow our students to relax and enjoy their time together more readily. As students arrive, each will receive a dance cards to wear on their wrist or keep in their pocket. Before dancing begins, students will ask each other to dance then put their name on the other’s dance card for a dance of their choice-swing, waltz, or two-step. The dancing begins when dance cards are mostly full. Each dance will be introduced with its number on the card, so students can find each other.

6th Grade Dance Lessons

Leading up to their first dance at Great Hearts Irving, our 6th Grade students are enjoying weekly dance lessons during one of their Lyceum periods. Students are learning three classic dances, the East Coast Swing, the Waltz, and the Texas Two-Step.

7th & 8th Grade Dance Lesson Refreshers

Our returning 7th and 8th Grade students received dance lessons last year. To freshen up their dance moves and to teach new scholars, we are offering Dance Lesson Refreshers for all 7th and 8th grade students on Wednesday, February 28th and Thursday, February 29th from 4:00-5:00 pm on the Athena Turf .
